Chip's Tips - HoldRite HydroFlame Pro Installation Instructions for Metal Deck (with optional water dam)

Image

When sleeving and firestopping for “through penetrations” in a concrete floor slab over a corrugated metal form deck, some applications are a bit more challenging to achieve than when doing so on a flat form deck.

In this case we will be looking at sleeving, firestopping and water-stopping for pipe penetrations, while also providing a 2 in. tall water dam above the concrete floor. The requirement for a water dam above the floor is still something required by a high percentage of developers and design engineers. Let’s look at a great way to accomplish this, by using HoldRite’s UL Listed HydroFlame Pro Series firestop sleeving system, which has some very unique features and benefits.

First of all, Holdrite HydroFlame Pro Series is the only manufactured firestop sleeving system that actually physically fits within a 2-1/2 in. thick concrete floor slab over corrugated metal decking. It accomplishes this while also providing a UL W-Rated water-tight seal around the penetrating piping, without the use of accessories or caulking, for most pipe types. 2-1/2 in. is the most common thickness for these types of floors across most of the US, so these exclusive features are very important to many contractors.

When a project’s specification calls for a 2 in. tall water dam to protrude above the top of the concrete floor surface, the HoldRite HydroFlame Pro Series (HFP) sleeves can provide the solution.

Consider the steps below:

Image
Step 1

Select a standard telescoping HFP sleeve (HFP-M2 shown).

Step 2

Remove the outer sleeve extension and safety cap.

Step 3

Cut the inner sleeve to desired height.

Step 4

Snap sleeve base onto an HFP CD plate (HFPCD2 shown).

Step 5

Cut the sleeve extension at the marking Cut Here for CD.

Step 6

Screw in the long part of the extension through the CD plate and into the underside of the base.

Step 7

Install the short part of the sleeve extension and safety cap on top (twist to lock it in position). While the standard CD sleeve configuration requires just 2-1/2 in. slab thickness, in this configuration using the female threaded short sleeve extension piece for this application, approx. 3-1/4 in. slab is required.

Step 8

After the concrete is poured (by others) remove the safety cap and screw in the optional water dam (HFPWD2 shown) and then the pipe and riser clamp. The HFP water dam product spec sheet includes weight load ratings, indicating that any pipe that can fit through the water dam can safely support the weight of the riser clamp and pipe resting on top of it.
